   Georgia is rich in heroic tales and legends, most of which belong to mythology. The legends embody man’s struggle with the evil powers of nature.
   The different versions of the epic “Givergil” spread among the people, have inspired Vakhtang Oniani, Honoured Artist of Georgia to create the canvas “Givergil”

   Svaneti is one of the most beautiful regions of Georgia. It is famous for its fantastic canyons and summits covered with eternal snow.
   The national poetry of Svaneti is as monumental and original as the nature and architecture of the region. The honoured artist of Georgia Vakhtang Oniani has restored and treated on the bases of song variants for the point of view of literature, and has illustrated heroical episodes from the life of Svan people, struggling for freedom.

   The tale about Amirani is very old and is deeply rooted in pagan epoch. As the origin of this tale is considered to be of pre-Christian period and is appropriated to immemorial time, the value and importance of Amirani-any is in the roots of Georgian peoples’ outlook’ in scientific consideration of ancient view, in studying Georgian pagan pantheon, in realizing of archaic artistic thinking.
   Amirani is the son of gold-hair Daly- the goddess of hunting. He was adopted by Iamany and he became Badry’s and Usupy’s brother, who were the sons of Iamany. The parentless brothers were brought up in poverty. Amirani’s deeds were really heroic: set free the sun from giant-dragon’s stomach, killed the giant, killed three dragons, razed to the ground nine brother giant’s kingdom, brought bride from the heaven – the daughter of clouds’ sovereign Kamary, killed sorcerer ox, stole fire from gods and gave it to man. At last he gave battle to god, but god punished and tied him to Caucasus.
   There are fixed one hundred and fifty versions of this tale about Amirany. Honoured artist of Georgian SSR Vakhtang Oniani collected and united different version of this mythological epos.
